Wisdom Teeth, Gums & Pain Relief

Wisdom teeth, gum inflammation and pain relief

At this time, stress levels can be high and sometimes in times of stress we can have an onset of acute infections in our gum tissues.

Wisdom Teeth

  • If you start to feel some tenderness in your gum tissue around your wisdom teeth – this is called Pericoronitis; in some cases this can lead to severe pain.
  • A few things you can do at the first signs of pericoronitis is thoroughly brushing the area, even reaching underneath the gum flap that is usually present – this can be quite uncomfortable but effective.
  • It is a good idea to use a mouthwash for consecutive days when dealing with pericoronitis – effective mouthwashes in reducing gum inflammation are those containing chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.
  • Please be mindful that long term use of a mouthwash containing chlorhexidine can cause brown staining so it’s normally recommended to use for no longer than 2 weeks.
  • If you are in pain or concerned about any dental issues please do not hesitate to contact us asap so we can tailor things specific to your needs.

Gum Inflammation

  • If you have had deep scaling or it’s been awhile since you have visited a dental professional you may be more susceptible to a gum infection during stressful times.
  • It’s important to remember that any pain or soreness should subside in 1-2 weeks and should gradually start to feel better day to day.
  • If you have pain that gets progressively worse or unmanageable please contact your dental clinic as soon as possible.
  • Gentle but thorough brushing on the gum area is extremely important.
  • Use a mouthwash for consecutive days when dealing with a gunm inflammation – effective mouthwashes in reducing gum inflammation are those containing chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.

Abscess

  • If you notice a swelling or pimple in your mouth, please contact your dental clinic straight away.
  • these can cause severe pain and often require antibiotic treatment

Pain Relief

  • For pain relief it is recommended that  people should opt for paracetamol.
