Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Extaction

Is it time to remove your wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow at the end of your upper and lower gums. They are the last adult teeth to arrive, usually around 18 – 25 years of age and sometimes, they need to be removed. Sometimes these teeth can cause pain as they grow and there may not be enough room in your mouth for the teeth to grow normally. They might grow at a different angle  and crowd your other teeth and put pressure on the neighboring teeth and gums. This is called “impaction”. Even if they erupt through your gums they are often difficult to care for and clean because of their position.

If they don’t come through properly, grow in a difficult position or cause infections, they may need to be removed. X-rays tell the dentist how your wisdom teeth are erupting and if they will need to be extracted. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, however if extraction is needed, removal as early as possible  is recommended.

FAQs

There are some symptoms which might indicate you have impacted wisdom teeth. They can include infection, pain, cysts, ulcers and swelling. Because  they are difficult to keep clean due to their position, food can become stuck and tooth decay can develop on the wisdom tooth or the tooth closest to the wisdom tooth.

You should make an appointment to see a dentist as soon as symptoms develop. If not addressed immediately, infections can cause serious complications. Wisdom teeth problems will not go away by themselves.

Radiographically when the roots have completed 1/2 to 2/3rds of their growth. They are easier to remove at this stage.

Depending on what the x-rays show, wisdom teeth can often be removed by the dentist. If the case is more complicated, our dentists will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
